State : MANIPUR (Vaiphei)
VAIPHEI – They are notified as a scheduled tribe, with the nomenclature of Vaiphui in the state of Manipur. The neighboring Meitei people reflex to them as kiki. Their language, Vaiphei, belongs to the Kiki-Chin subgroup of the Tibeto-Burman language family. They use the Roman script. They are well conversant with the Meitai language. In the past, the members of the community could be identified by their attire and their hairstyle in which they used cotton tassels. Tattooing among the males was common. Their staple food includes rice, peas, beans, roots, tubers, vegetables, chiefly grown in kitchen gardens and the meat of game. They drink home-made alcoholic liquor occasionally.
