Madurkathi is a traditional craft from the Medinipur district of Bengal, where “Madur” means floor mat in Bengali. It is made from Madur kottiri, a soft natural reed that grows abundantly in the alluvial regions of East and West Medinipur. This age-old cottage industry is mainly carried out by skilled women artisans, who handweave not only floor mats but also a variety of decorative and utility products such as table mats, curtains, bags, and other home décor items. Madurkathi floor mats are traditionally made in three types: Aek Rokha, which is thin and lightweight; Dui Rokha, which is thicker and heavier with a double weave; and Masland, known for its rich texture and decorative finish.

Note: Although an artisan takes care to maintain a pattern and color scheme, creating identical products, a slight variation may be visible in this image, which is of handmade products.
