The places Bagh, which lends its name to the Bagh Prints, is a small tribal town in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh. The Khatri community, which comprises the chhipas or printers, came here about 400 years ago from Larkana in Sindh, which is famous for its Ajrak prints. Bagh’s proximity to the river was an important reason for its selection, as flowing river water is vital to the printing process. The design repertoire of Bagh print includes geometrical and floral compositions, and the blocks used for stamping are intricately carved. The process is characterized by hand-printed wood block relief prints using naturally sourced pigments and dyes. Bagh print motifs are typically geometric, paisley, or floral designs, dyed with vegetable-based red and black colors over a white background. It is a popular textile printing technique, and its name is derived from the village of Bagh, located on the banks of the Bagh River. The origins of Bagh print are uncertain, but it is believed that the tradition is over 1,000 years old, with techniques passed down through generations of family practice.
