The interesting use of beads in all sizes and a riot of colours, along with the innovative use of knots to bind them together, are the hallmarks of Gujarati beadwork handcrafted by the Bhil and Bhilala tribes. The Kathi beadwork motifs depict divine and human figures combined with flowers, cradles, racing camels, animals, and birds. These are crafted using translucent and semi-translucent colored beads set against a background of white opaque beads. The most commonly used colours are orange, yellow, green, purple, and red. Their Central Indian counterparts from Madhya Pradesh follow a different process. Their designs range from simple, single-stranded necklaces to intricate patterns featuring cross-linked rows of beads. Bhil women are highly skilled in creating bead necklaces, bracelets, armbands, anklets, earrings, and decorative hangings—each piece a testament to their exquisite craftsmanship and artistic heritage.
